Cancer gene testing

Until now, cancer has generally been considered primarily caused by acquired factors such as exposure to carcinogens in one's living environment. Typical examples include Helicobacter pylori infection and stomach cancer, and smoking and lung cancer. However, it has become clear that congenital genetic abnormalities contribute to the development of cancer in a significant number of cases.
For example, it has been found that women born with a genetic abnormality called BCR1 are eight times more likely to develop breast cancer and 40 times more likely to develop ovarian cancer compared to women who are negative for the gene. Advances in genetic science have made it possible to relatively easily check for predispositions to developing such specific cancers. By analyzing the genome of somatic cells collected through blood or oral swabs, it has become possible to detect congenital genetic abnormalities that make people more susceptible to cancer.
The significance of this test is considerable. Currently, a uniform cancer screening policy has been established for the entire population. For example, mammography for breast cancer screening is set to begin at age 40, or 35 even with a family history, and colorectal cancer screening is set to begin at age 50, or 40 even with a family history. If the existence of a genetic abnormality that makes one more susceptible to cancer is known, it is justified to start screening at a younger age and using more precise methods. Early detection increases the chances of a complete cure for cancer.
However, the potential downsides must also be considered. Even if the gene is positive, it does not mean that cancer will develop in 100% of cases.
