PET scan imaging process

A PET scan is an extremely useful examination for the early detection of many types of cancer in the body.

Generally, cancer cells have an increased rate of metabolism compared to normal cells. They take up large amounts of nutrients such as glucose (described as being "avid") and proliferate actively. PET scans take advantage of this characteristic. A glucose analogue called fluoro-deoxy-glucose (FDG), labeled with the radionuclide F-18, is injected, and after a certain period of time, minute amounts of radiation emitted from the entire body are detected. A CT scan is performed simultaneously, and by overlaying the two, the site emitting abnormal radiation is precisely identified. The degree of uptake is color-coded, providing vivid and striking images.

While PET scans are an extremely effective tool for the early detection of cancer, they cannot detect all cancers at an early stage. They are less effective for cancers in organs that are naturally metabolically active, such as the brain and heart, as well as organs through which the radionuclide is excreted, such as the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. Additionally, final tissue diagnosis still requires a biopsy using conventional diagnostic methods.
