Intraocular pressure test

Glaucoma, along with age-related macular degeneration, is one of the major causes of gradual vision loss with advancing age.
Glaucoma is a condition in which intraocular pressure increases due to various causes, leading to abnormalities in the function of the retina, which governs vision. While acute angle-closure glaucoma—which causes sudden eye pain—is relatively easy to diagnose, the chronic open-angle type progresses without symptoms and gradually leads to visual field loss, making it difficult to diagnose without a specific trigger. Once it reaches a stage where obvious visual field abnormalities occur, treatment options become limited. It is important to detect signs of glaucoma early by measuring intraocular pressure while asymptomatic and to begin appropriate treatment.
At our center, we measure intraocular pressure using the CT-80 tonometer manufactured by Japan's Topcon Corporation. Because it is a non-contact type, there is very little discomfort. In cases where an abnormality in intraocular pressure is found, we refer patients to ophthalmologists specializing in retinal diseases.
